Defining Success

What Is Your Definition of Success?

What is your definition of success?

At its core, success is achieving a desired outcome or goal — but it’s also so much more than that. Success is a mindset.

It’s not limited to status, money, or career milestones. Success is deeply personal and varies from one person to another. What feels like success to one individual might not even matter to someone else — and that’s perfectly okay.

Success Looks Different for Everyone

It’s unfair to measure someone else’s life based on your own version of success.

For some, success might mean being a stay-at-home parent and raising happy, healthy children. For others, it could be climbing the corporate ladder or achieving financial freedom. To some, it’s faith-based; for others, it’s tied to creativity, purpose, or peace of mind.

There’s no universal formula — and that’s what makes success so beautiful.

Breaking Free from Society’s Timelines

As a society, we often fall into the trap of comparison. We’re told there’s a “right” time to reach certain milestones:

“Married by 30. Kids by 35. Career established by 40.”

Sound familiar?

Having goals and timelines is healthy — but when we become fixated on meeting them by a specific age, we start feeling inadequate if we don’t.

Here’s the truth: Success isn’t about how fast you achieve your goal. It’s about the fact that you achieved it at all.

Your Version of Success Is Yours Alone

We are often our own toughest critics. Maybe your goal is to launch a business by 30, or to become the youngest executive in your company — and if that’s your vision, that’s amazing.

But remember: your definition of success doesn’t have to match or be built off of anyone else’s.

If someone else’s success looks different from yours, that doesn’t diminish either of your accomplishments. Success isn’t a competition — it’s a personal journey.

Celebrate Others While Honoring Your Own Journey

Let’s learn to celebrate each other’s milestones, even when they don’t look like our own. Our differences are what make us special — they’re what make us stand out.

What someone else achieves is meant for them. And what you’re meant to accomplish is uniquely designed for you.

“God has each of us on a journey, fulfilling a purpose that only we can complete.”

If we compare or delay our progress because our journey doesn’t look like Beyoncé’s or Bill Gates’s, we risk postponing the unique success we’re meant to bring into the world.

Redefine Success for Your Current Season

So, take a moment to ask yourself:

• What does success look like to me right now?

• What’s realistic and fulfilling at this stage of my life?

• How has my definition of success evolved as I’ve grown?

Your mindset directly influences your success. The more you focus on growth, gratitude, and progress — not perfection — the more attainable your goals become.

How to Build a Success Mindset

Here are a few simple ways to cultivate your version of success:

✅ Set realistic goals and timelines. Be honest with yourself about what’s achievable.

✅ Don’t compare yourself to others. Their journey isn’t your journey.

✅ Ask yourself, “Is this feasible right now?” Focus on what’s sustainable.

✅ Break big goals into smaller steps. Progress is progress — no matter how small.

✅ Celebrate your wins. Recognize every victory, even the tiny ones.

Appreciate Every Step of the Journey

Sometimes, we overlook our small successes while waiting for the “big win.” But remember — every small step brings you closer to where you want to be.

Even if you don’t reach your goal within your original timeline, that doesn’t make you any less successful. Success isn’t about how long it took — it’s about the journey you embraced to get there and the growth you experienced along the way.

Be kind to yourself. You’re doing better than you think.
